Nobody likes a bully. But how often do we try to get other people to do things our way without considering what's going on in their lives? Isn't that...never mind - it's too early in the blog to ask pointed questions like that.
Bullied, but not a Bully
When David was chosen by God to become the King of Israel there was a very insecure man on the throne. His name was Saul. David showed the utmost respect, but Saul did not.
Years later, when Saul had died and David had been crowned king, David's son Absalom sought to claim the throne for himself. As David fled Jerusalem he said something remarkable to Zadok the priest.
“Return the ark of God to the city. If I find favor with the Lord, he will bring me back and allow me to see both it and its dwelling place. However, if he should say, ‘I do not delight in you,’ then here I am—he can do with me whatever pleases him.” (2 Samuel 15:25-26, CSB)
Who is Truly Great?
David knew that only God is truly great. Only He had the authority to give the throne and take it away. There was nothing any person could do that would prevent that. So David trusted.
Who is defying your authority? Or maybe you're dealing with a tyrannical leader. Is God on the throne of your heart as you deal with these circumstances? He knows what's going on. You can trust Him.
*To learn more about how to deal with these authority issues I recommend the book "A Tale of Three Kings" by Gene Edwards.
